Letter from the Director

Welcome to the Program in Art History Program at UC Davis! This site offers information and resources for current and prospective students, for alumni, and for the campus and larger community. You can use this site to get acquainted with our faculty and staff, check on undergraduate major requirements and course offerings, and learn more about the graduate program, including curriculum and admission policies. You can also find the scheduling for special events, and links to art and art history research tools.

Art History studies visual culture, from the traditional forms such as architecture, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and decorative arts, to contemporary photography, film, and the mass media. We offer historical and theoretical training in courses ranging from the art and architecture of the ancient Mediterranean and China, to those of Islam, Europe and North America, to the transnational culture of the twenty-first century. Please look at our faculty links to learn more about us individually. Within a small and friendly Program, all our faculty members are dedicated to providing a rigorous education in research, writing skills and critical thought, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Our teaching and research encompass such issues as globalization, gender and sexuality, and critical theory.

Art History is of great interdisciplinary value for its ability to analyze images in their historical contexts, and we enjoy cooperating with students and colleagues from across the campus. Art History is relevant whether you are interested in a career in museum work or in arts journalism and education. Above all, Art History has never been more significant if you want to be an informed citizen and a critical reader of the images that have helped shape our world.
