This course
considers the major movements in the painting and sculpture of the United
States at a time when American artists frequently went abroad both for
training and to pursue their careers, while patrons increasingly judged
American artists by international standards. The course investigates how
Americans reacted to such movements as Realism, Impressionism, and Modernism.
It ends by examining the Regionalist and Social Realist movements that
emerged just prior to the Great Depression. Like other upper-division
offerings in the Art History program, this course presents the stylistic
and thematic development of painting and sculpture in the context of social,
political, and cultural change. emphasis is given to tracing European
artistic, cultural, and philosophical currents and their effect on American
artists. Students in the course will learn the fundamentals of visual
and contectual analysis, and critical writing.
