DESIGN THEORY, METHODOLOGY AND HISTORY
DESIGN PROGRAM

Position: Assistant or Associate Professor of Design Theory, Methodology and History.

Qualifications: This position is available for an individual working in the area of design theory, methodology and history. This 9-month position requires a specialist who is deeply engaged in inquiries on the meanings and processes of design with strong interdisciplinary knowledge and interests in design education. The candidate should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, creativity, an interest in teaching, research accomplishments and professional leadership appropriate for a major research university, and solid competency in design theory, design methods, or design history.

Responsibilities: Applicants must hold a PhD in design theory, methodology or history and have a promising record of scholarship or creative recognition for his/her work. The person filling this position will be expected to establish or carry forward a research program utilizing some aspect of design theory, design methodology or history. Duties of this position include teaching 4 to 5 courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels; mentoring graduate students; developing and maintaining an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity; and participating in curriculum development and university/community service. The person hired for this position will oversee the preparation of design students at all levels to successfully engage intellectually and philosophically in studies within the major. Further responsibilities include participation in the development of new undergraduate and graduate teaching programs; working collaboratively with faculty and staff in the Design Program, other interdisciplinary programs, and professional groups; serving as a student adviser; and forging relationships with the outside design community.

Starting Date: Fall Quarter 2008

Salary: Commensurate with experience of Assistant or Associate Professor ranks at the University of California, Davis.

General Information: The Design Program at UC Davis has over 400 declared undergraduate majors. The program consists of emphasis areas including visual communication (graphics, exhibition design and multi-media), interior architecture (including furniture and lighting design), and textiles and fashion. Design has an MFA Program in its three emphasis areas and is. The Design Program is undergoing significant change and renewal. In fall 2006 the program transferred from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences where it was located for over 30 years to the College of Letters & Sciences, Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies. The recently established California Lighting Technology Center, an experimental research and development unit, is a center within the program that underscores Design's on-going commitment to expanding the intellectual boundaries of design while making the field more responsive to the needs of society and the environment.

The University of California, Davis is located in a city known for its innovative responses to environmental and social problems and for its quality of life. Full-time enrollment at UC Davis is about 30,000 students. The Davis campus is known for excellent programs in performing and visual arts, biological and environmental sciences, psychology and sociology, engineering and medicine, and veterinary sciences to name a few. Davis is within an hour's drive of the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa Valley, and the high Sierras and fifteen minutes away from the vibrant state capitol, Sacramento.
