Art History is the study of the visual arts in civilization. It
examines changing values in all fields of visual culture,
including painting, sculpture, graphics, photography,
architecture, film, the mass media, and forms of popular
expression. Its interdisciplinary reach encompasses literature,
history, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, gender studies,
critical theory, and cultural studies. Art History emphasizes
visual as well as verbal and written literacy, providing more
than the standard advantages to a liberal arts education.
Students majoring in Art History will engage with the
wide-ranging opportunities its curriculum presents for learning
and research. Studying Art History develops visual
literacy, communication skills, critical/creative thinking and an
understanding of diversity.

Pence Gallery as part of their Art History Lecture Series.

The Second Annual Art History Graduate Symposium will explore
how past and present expressions of gender though
objects illuminates the intersections between material and
gendered self-image.
This public lecture will explore the evolution of the art trade
from the 18th century onward. Intended especially for students
who will become the museum professionals, art advisors and
private collectors of tomorrow, Alan Templeton (B.A., art history
and psychology, ‘82), long-time investor, former professional
artist and labor union administrator, and occasional guest
curator will cover how the fine arts interact with money,
museums and the marketplace in a variety of ways.
